Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

It is thought that 5-9% of the US population has the neurodevelopmental condition of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which can result in significant functional and social challenges for those who have it.

Characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and often hyperactivity, the condition is usually diagnosed in childhood but can also be first recognized in adults who have been living with it since childhood. The condition can be addressed by medications, behavioral therapy, and coaching/social support.

How are the topics of ADHD awareness, treatments, and strategies being addressed through social media?

Search Trends

The Trends Section provides an overview of some of the most recent and relevant topics that relate to particular health conditions.

It features a selection of the topics that have the fastest growing Google search interest across the last three months, and reflects the inquiries of patients, healthcare providers, scientists, and others who are invested in the topic.

This is valuable to understand people’s interests and concerns at the present moment, and often include the U.S. states that have the highest interest in a topic.

Quilt.AI brings these trends to life through an analysis that incorporates both cultural and scientific lenses.

What is trending on search for ADHD?

Search interest for “symptoms of ADHD in women” increased by 28.9% in the past 3 months, from June to August 2022

1. Recognizing ADHD in women

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder goes undiagnosed in women because they tend to have less obvious or socially disruptive symptoms than men [1]. Unlike men, women tend to exhibit inattentive ADHD which makes it hard to focus, pay attention to details, stay organized, and remember things [2]

The growing search interest in the symptoms of ADHD in women is driven in part by TikTok, where content related to ADHD – and to ADHD in women in particular – has been popular in recent months.

2. Providing Klarity on ADHD

Klarity is a tele-health service that aims to make professional mental health diagnoses and treatment accessible and affordable to everyone. Klarity is available in 30+ states and partners with licensed psychiatric experts to offer low-cost online services for mental health care.

Klarity has received positive reviews as a platform for remotely  diagnosing and treating ADHD [1]. Compared to other telehealth services, it is more affordable for ADHD treatment, and more flexible in terms of setting up appointments.

3. The search for cheaper Adderall

Adderall is a leading treatment for ADHD; it treats the condition by stimulating the central nervous system[2]. Adderall requires a prescription in both its branded and generic forms.

Generic Adderall (amphetamine/ dextroamphetamine salts) has exactly the same active ingredients and benefits as branded Adderall, but may have different inactive ingredients such as coloring [3].

Search interest in generic Adderall is beginning to creep up. This is likely due to the fact that it can cost up to  80% less than the branded version [1]. This cost difference is critical, esp. given today’s inflationary environment.

4. Self-diagnosing ADHD

ADHD can only be diagnosed by a licensed mental health provider or doctor [1]. However, there are free ADHD self-assessment tests online. The results of the ADHD test are helpful in starting a conversation with doctors, therapists, or family and friends.

People use the online self-assessment test to determine if they need to see a mental health professional for a diagnosis or treatment [2]. (There are also separate ADHD tests for women and girls [3].)

The online tests are particularly helpful because the cost of getting a formal diagnosis can be high, esp. for those without the appropriate insurance coverage. By taking an online test before seeking a professional opinion, people feel more sure that the expense is worth it.

ADHD in Culture

The Culture Section highlights emerging cultural trends, new products, and notable dialogue about a variety of health conditions. The purpose of this section is to zoom in on what has been happening within the cultural and professional landscape of a particular health condition–stories that are often missed by quantitative searches.

By featuring influential social media items, patient discourse, professional dialogue, product innovations, and impactful news items, this section illuminates the lived experiences of many patients, while also providing a snapshot of the developments happening around them.

Here, Quilt.AI offers a detailed and nuanced perspective of what is new and what is meaningful.

1. Spreading awareness of ADHD and its symptoms

Across social media platforms, but esp. on TikTok, there is a high volume of content that spreads awareness of ADHD and its symptoms. Some of this content comes from healthcare professionals, but most comes from people who are living with the condition.

There is particular emphasis on symptoms that are easy to ignore, as well as symptoms specific to women and people of different ages.

2. Art as an outlet for ADHD

ADHD patients are using social media platforms like TikTok to creatively express the discomfort and chaos they experience due to ADHD. Interestingly, communities are growing around these posts, with ADHD sufferers – as well as their loved ones – providing validation and support to those who are expressing their ADHD frustrations through art.

These conversations are happening under hashtags like #mentalhealthart, as well as under more generic hashtags like #ADHD, #art and  #awareness.

3. Sharing resources for living with ADHD

People with ADHD are using TikTok to share the resources that are helping them live with the condition. Their aim is to give other ADHD patients options for improving the quality of their everyday lives. Resources discussed include allopathic medications, ayurvedic remedies, and behavior modifications that can reduce ADHD’s impact on daily activities.

Along with ADHD patients, this type of content is created and shared by therapists and healthcare professionals as well. Key hashtags for ADHD resources include #naturaladhdhelp, #adhdawareness and #adhdtips.

4. Treating and tweeting ADHD

On Twitter, much of the conversation around ADHD in the US focuses on its manifestations in and impact on children. People discuss the low diagnosis rates in children between 4 and 17, and the tweets reflect rising awareness among parents on the condition and its potential treatments.

As well, there are plenty of tweets that talk about new breakthroughs in ADHD treatments for children – for example, prescription-based video games.
